Wednesday Wisdom: Career Exploration

In my experience working with students, I've met many who start uni knowing what they want to do after, many who have no idea what they want to do, and then a handful in between those two points. Which one are you?

No matter where you fall on this career planning continuum, doing a little career exploration while you're in university will help you out.

With opportunities like co-operative work terms, internships, volunteering, and on-campus work, you have the chance to explore a variety of roles.

And remember, it can be about discovering what you like just as much as what you DON'T like. And this works for tasks, workplace environments, and even the style of boss you want to work for! You don't just have to focus on the career. You'll learn about other aspects of work that you do or do not like, too.

This is also a great time to start building your professional network. Each job you're going to apply for is going to ask for references, so these early connections are really important.

I've written more about how to start building your career in university on the Choose Your Uni blog. Check it out:

If you want to search for job descriptions and positions to learn more about what kinds of opportunities are out there, I usually recommend Indeed.ca. You can take a look at different roles to see what kinds of education and experience they require.

Emilia, the career coach behind Sunny Side Up Coaching, shares great career planning advice and ideas on her Instagram - definitely check her out as you make decisions about your career!

I also recently started following Erin McGoff (@advicewitherin) on Instagram and she shares really great career advice, especially for career beginners. Everything from acing your interviews to getting more money out of salary negotiations.

Your university may also have a career mentorship program, so if you have the chance to sign up, do it! You can learn a lot from someone who already started their career from you university or program!

Wednesday Wisdom: Study Smarter, Not Harder! When I was an undergrad student, working away at my bachelors degree, I didn't even know there were different ways to study. But there ARE! And some of them are way better than others. University students should spend their first semester or year trying out new study methods to see what works best for them. We all have different preferred methods of learning! For example, I do not learn well from listening. Having a text read to me is pretty much...

Wednesday Wisdom Are you familiar with the Maclean's University Rankings? They differ from other rankings because they focus only on Canadian universities, and they share a ton of really helpful information for students and their supporters as you make decisions about uni! They also have a comprehensive program ranking list, so you can find out which unis offer the best business, nursing, engineering, computer science or education programs! Additionally, they very clearly share and explain...

Wednesday Wisdom Over the next couple of months, I'll be sharing tips for planning your program, university and career! This is particularly geared at grade 12s, who are receiving their university offers over the next couple of months and will have to make decisions. Today, I want to talk about...
